Flying with children: a calm plan

Seats, documents, snacks and routines for a smoother family flight.

A calmer family flight begins before the airport: confirm documents and seating, separate the child’s essentials from the main luggage, and plan for transitions rather than perfect behaviour.

01

Book the family, not just the seats

Enter every traveller’s name exactly as shown in the travel document and confirm whether the child needs a separate ticket, visa, consent letter or other documentation. Requirements depend on nationality, destination and who is travelling with the child.

Review the operating airline’s rules for lap infants, bassinets, approved child restraints, strollers and seating. If sitting together is essential, do not rely on an airport request alone: understand the seat assignment policy and contact the airline early when the online map does not solve the problem.

  • Check all names and dates of birth.
  • Confirm documents with official border authorities.
  • Ask how stroller and car seat items are tagged and returned.
02

Use a restraint that is actually approved

The FAA strongly recommends an approved child restraint system or approved harness appropriate to the child rather than holding a child on an adult’s lap. Approval labels, size limits and permitted seat positions matter, and the device must fit the aircraft seat.

Rules outside the United States may differ. Check with the operating airline before departure, bring the manufacturer instructions if useful and be prepared to install the restraint yourself. Exit rows and some premium or airbag-equipped seats may not permit child restraints.

03

Pack one reachable child bag

Keep the first layer of family supplies under the seat, not in an overhead bin several rows away. Divide liquids and food so security can inspect them without unpacking everything. TSA, for example, permits formula, breast milk, toddler drinks and baby food above the normal 100 ml limit in reasonable quantities, but travellers should declare them for separate screening.

Pack more nappies or diapers and clothing than the schedule suggests. Delays happen. Include empty sealable bags, wipes, prescribed medication, a familiar comfort item and one quiet activity that does not depend on onboard Wi-Fi.

  • Food and drink allowed for the journey
  • Medication with labels or documentation
  • Two small clothing changes and an adult top
  • Wipes, disposal bags and a comfort item
04

Design the airport sequence

Explain the journey in simple stages: bag drop, security, gate, aircraft and arrival. Allow extra time without arriving so early that everyone is exhausted before boarding. Use the toilet and refill permitted water bottles before the boarding rush.

During take-off and landing, swallowing, feeding or drinking may help with pressure discomfort for some children. Never give sedating medicine simply to make a child sleep unless a qualified clinician has specifically advised it for that child.

05

Recover the routine after arrival

Children can experience jet lag and disrupted sleep just like adults. Move meals, daylight and bedtime toward local time, but keep the first day flexible. A familiar bedtime sequence can matter more than recreating the exact home schedule.

If the child has a health condition, severe allergy or requires equipment, contact the airline and airport assistance service in advance. Keep an action plan and essential supplies with the responsible adult, not in checked baggage.
